STONE TOWN
Stone Town, Zanzibar’s historical and cultural center, remains largely unchanged for 200 years. This vibrant area features winding alleys, bustling bazaars mosques, and grand Arab houses, showcasing wealth through intricately carved wooden doors over 500 unique designs. A walking tour reveals timeless, highlighting the House of Wonders, the former slave market, and the Arab Fort. You’ll encounter an intriguing blend of architectural styles, vibrant markets, and fantastic shops filled with souvenirs and handicrafts.
PRISON ISLAND
In 1893, Lloyd Mathews established the prison with intention of relocating violent criminals from the Tanganyika mainland to Prison Island. Once known for its history as a slave prison and a quarantine station for Zanzibar and the mainland, the island now offers a serene escape. Located just off the Old Stone Town, it is home to a colony giant land tortoises brought from Seychelles in the late 19th century, many of which are over a century old!
These endangered Aldabran Tortoises were a gift from the Seychelles government. Visitors to the island can feed and interact with the tortoises, and if time permits, enjoy a walk through the lush interior where various, colorful peacocks, bats, and stunning butterflies can be spotted. an eye out for the elusive Duikers, a rare small antelope species. The island is surrounded by a beautiful coral reef perfect for snorkeling, and features a lovely white beach sunbathing. This tour offers a wonderful opportunity to explore both history wildlife, and to view Stone Town from the sea, much like ancient mariners did.
