MARANGU ROUTE, RECOMMENDATIONS, SUCCESS RATE AND PRICES
Overview
The Marangu Route is the oldest and one of the most popular trails on Kilimanjaro—famously used by Hans Meyer during the first successful summit in 1889. It passes through all the mountain’s climate zones, from lush rainforest to alpine desert.
What makes Marangu unique is its dormitory-style huts, offering more comfort and shelter—especially helpful during the rainy seasons (mid-March to late May, and late October to December).
It’s available in 5- and 6-day options, with the 6-day itinerary offering better acclimatization and a smoother experience overall.

Expert Recommendation
The Marangu route features scenic views of Kilimanjaro’s southern slopes, but since it uses the same trail for both ascent and descent, it offers less variety and tends to be more crowded.
The 5-day option may seem appealing, but it poses tough acclimatization challenges. For beginners, the 6-day itinerary—or any 7+ day route—is a safer and more comfortable choice.
- 5 Days Marangu
- 6 Days Marangu
This shorter option is best suited for experienced trekkers or those already acclimatized. The faster pace allows little time for altitude adjustment, making it more physically demanding.
Ideal for:
Experienced hikers with prior altitude exposure
Those short on time but confident in their fitness
Not recommended for beginners due to the increased risk of altitude sickness and lower summit success rates.
This extended version gives your body more time to adjust, making it a safer and more comfortable option than the 5-day trek. It’s ideal for beginners looking for a less physically demanding route with the comfort of hut accommodations.
Ideal for:
First-time trekkers
Climbers looking for a gentler ascent
Those trekking during rainy seasons
A solid choice for a classic Kilimanjaro climb with better acclimatization and shelter along
Marangu Route - Summit Success Rate
5-day: Crater Rim – 88.0%, Uhuru Peak – 83.8%
6-day: Crater Rim – 93.14%, Uhuru Peak – 86.6%
The 6-day itinerary has a noticeably higher summit success rate and is better suited for beginners with average fitness. In contrast, the 5-day version is more demanding and best for experienced trekkers with prior altitude exposure.
While Marangu has lower success rates than routes like Lemosho or Machame due to its steeper acclimatization profile, our results stand out. Thanks to our expert guides, extensive safety equipment, and strict health protocols—including twice-daily medical checks and the largest oxygen tank inventory on Kilimanjaro—DreamWorth Safaris offers a safer, more successful climb to Uhuru Peak.
