MARANGU 6 DAYS

From $1,718 per person

The Marangu Route, also called the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the most affordable way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and the only route with hut accommodation at every camp. The communal huts have bunk beds with mattresses and pillows, plus solar lighting. Mandara and Kibo Huts each have 60 beds, while Horombo Hut has 120. Lower huts have bathrooms and running water; the last camp has basic latrines.

Climbers share meals in dining huts, creating a friendly atmosphere. The route is usually done in 5 days but can be extended to 6 days for better acclimatization, with an extra day at Horombo or a hike toward Mawenzi.

A taste of what to expect…

Day 1: Hotel to Mandara Hut

After breakfast and briefing, drive about one hour to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate to register and start your climb on Mount Kilimanjaro. Hike through the rainforest to Mandara Camp, with an optional visit to Maundi Crater for views of Northern Tanzania and Kenya. Along the way, spot eucalyptus trees, birdlife, and Colobus monkeys.

Leaving the rainforest behind, you follow a steady ascent across open moorlands to Horombo Camp on Mount Kilimanjaro. Enjoy stunning views of Mawenzi and the summit of Kibo. Along the way, spot giant lobelias and groundsels. As you gain height, you may begin to feel the effects of altitude.

  • Elevation: 2,700 m / 8,875 ft → 3,700 m / 12,200 ft

Ascending past the last watering point, you cross the saddle of Mount Kilimanjaro between Kibo and Mawenzi. Vegetation fades from upper heathland into a barren “moonscape” as you approach Kibo Camp. After arrival, enjoy dinner, rest, and prepare for your midnight summit climb.

  • Elevation: 3,700 m / 12,200 ft → 4,700 m / 15,500 ft

Very early in the morning (midnight–2 AM), begin your summit climb on Mount Kilimanjaro, trekking over steep scree or snow to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. From there, continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, where spectacular views await. After photos at the summit, descend to Kibo Camp for lunch and rest, then continue down to Horombo Camp.

  • Elevation: 4,700 m / 15,500 ft → 5,895 m / 19,340 ft; down to 3,700 m / 12,200 ft

After breakfast, descend steadily through moorland to Mandara Hut, then continue along a lush forest trail to Marangu Gate on Mount Kilimanjaro. A vehicle will meet you at the gate and transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi (about 1 hour).
