OVERVIEW

This sounds like an incredible adventure for anyone who’s eager to experience the diversity of East Africa’s natural beauty in just five days! Combining the famous wildlife of Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater with the stunning landscapes of Lake Natron and the active volcano, Ol Doinyo Lengai, really packs a punch.

Tarangire, with its river and dense concentration of elephants, would provide an intimate safari experience. Ngorongoro, as you mentioned, is like stepping into a wildlife paradise, with that unique mix of fauna in a volcanic caldera. The Great Rift Valley drive to Lake Natron would be breathtaking too — it’s not just a geological wonder but a haven for flamingos as well. Plus, the thought of seeing an active volcano like Ol Doinyo Lengai is truly something rare and special.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival in Arusha

The group arrives at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO). Participants are met by a representative of  DreamWorth Safaris and transferred to a hotel in Arusha.

Tarangire sounds like an absolute wildlife wonderland! The way the animals are drawn to the Tarangire River really paints a vivid picture. Giraffes, zebras, and buffaloes all gathered around the river, and then of course, the predators following close behind… that’s the circle of life right there. It must be incredible to witness the lions and other predators in action, especially with such a diverse mix of prey around.

The large elephant herds are also a major highlight! The fact that elephants feel so comfortable and unafraid of humans makes for such a unique experience. You’re right that it must be incredibly special to have one of these majestic animals approach your vehicle, just casually going about their day. And during the dry season, seeing so many elephants in one place must be jaw dropping definitely an unforgettable moment for any visitor.

Day two in Tarangire sounds like it’s going to be packed with discoveries! It’s great that you’ll be venturing into new areas of the park it’s almost like each section of Tarangire has its own character and hidden gems. Seeing more rare species like the gerenuks and oryx is such a treat. Those long-necked gerenuks must look almost out of place in the savannah, standing tall and graceful, while the oryx with their elegant horns are always a sight to behold.

The hyraxes are such a fun addition to the wildlife experience too! They might be small, but they’re full of personality. It’s funny that they’re related to elephants given how different they seem in size and appearance. The chance to get close for photos sounds awesome, especially with their curious nature.

And let’s not forget the birdwatching! With 550+ species, Tarangire is a dream for anyone who loves spotting birds. Whether it’s the vivid colors of a lilac-breasted roller or the stately elegance of a kori bustard, there’s bound to be something captivating in the skies or on the ground. The high-res binoculars will definitely help you catch those fine details from a distance.

This day will take place at Lake Natron, one of the most beautiful and remote destinations in Tanzania. Often featured in wildlife magazines, Lake Natron is the only place on Earth where the water shimmers with a striking red hue. This unique color comes from the presence of special bacteria that have a vivid blood-red pigment. However, the phenomenon can only truly be appreciated from a bird’s-eye view.

Surrounded by dramatic African landscapes, Lake Natron is home to a variety of wildlife, including ostriches, antelopes, zebras, and giraffes. Its isolation means you’ll encounter very few tourists, making it a peaceful and untouched location—perfect for either the start or the end of your safari through Tanzania’s northern parks.

The midday heat can be intense, but nearby natural springs offer a refreshing break. These springs are fed by water flowing down from the Ngorongoro Reserve. The water is incredibly pure and rich in sulfur. Some scientists believe it may support bone health while that hasn’t been definitively proven, it’s certainly not harmful and provides a revitalizing experience.

Lake Natron is also a haven for bird lovers, especially those enchanted by flamingos. Both large and small flamingos thrive here, with tens of thousands gathering at once a breathtaking sight, especially when flocks of brilliant pink birds take flight over the shimmering water.

Flamingos are particularly fond of Lake Natron because its highly alkaline waters protect them from predators. From September through April, this remote lake becomes the world’s most important breeding site for Lesser Flamingos over three-quarters of the global population are born here each year. Eggs are laid in the shallow, muddy flats, and fluffy gray chicks soon emerge along the shoreline. With a pair of binoculars, you can spot the tiny chicks as they take their first steps. Though they start off gray, their feathers soon take on the iconic pink hue.

Beyond flamingos, Lake Natron is home to pelicans and a variety of other bird species. Observing them in the wild is a completely different experience from the zoo the birds are lively, playful, and full of energy in their natural habitat.

Today you’ll visit the legendary Ngorongoro Crater—one of Africa’s greatest natural wonders.
Your day begins early with a drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The crater, formed by an ancient volcano, is often compared to The Lost World home to tens of thousands of wild animals living within its walls.

Though relatively small, it has the highest concentration of wildlife per square meter in the world. You’ll see animals up close, often gathered together across the open grasslands.

The descent into the crater takes about 30 minutes, passing through lush forest. A stop at the viewpoint offers a stunning panoramic view. Despite common myths, animals can leave the crater, but most stay thanks to plentiful grass and water and easy hunting for predators.

Inside, you’ll likely see elephants, buffaloes, lions, cheetahs, antelopes, zebras, and possibly endangered rhinos. Giraffes, however, are absent they can’t manage the steep descent due to their long legs and necks.

After your morning game drive, you’ll stop at Lake Magadi for a picnic. The area attracts birds, including kites that may try to steal food harmless, but bold! You’ll also spot hippos near the water, often surfacing for air. If one comes out, keep a safe distance.

Ngorongoro is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its unique ecosystem and incredible wildlife.
