RONGAI ROUTE, RECOMMENDATIONS, SUCCESS RATE AND PRICES

Overview

The Rongai route is a quieter, less-traveled path up Kilimanjaro, starting on the drier northern slope in a coniferous forest and descending via the lush Marangu route on the southwest side.

It’s much less crowded than the southern trails expect up to ten times fewer trekkers. The route is rich in scenery, with stunning views of Mawenzi and Kibo, unique flora like Giant Groundsels, and the chance to spot rare Bearded Vultures.

Imagine waking up beneath the rugged peaks of Mawenzi as the sunrise paints the rocks in golden light. For those seeking a peaceful and scenic Kilimanjaro adventure, Rongai is an excellent choice.

Recommendation

This route is available in 6- and 7-day options. For beginners without prior acclimatization, the 7-day itinerary is the better choice it allows more time to adjust, making the trek more comfortable and increasing your chances of reaching the summit.

The 6-day version is faster and better suited for those with high-altitude trekking experience or recent acclimatization.

This version is best for experienced trekkers who are already acclimatized or have hiked at high altitude recently. It’s a quicker ascent with less time to adjust, so it’s more demanding on the body.

Ideal for:

  • Climbers with prior altitude experience

  • Fit hikers looking for a shorter, quieter route

  • Those confident in their acclimatization ability

A scenic, off-the-beaten-path adventure for those ready to take on the challenge

Perfect for beginners or those seeking a more comfortable pace, this itinerary offers better acclimatization and a smoother overall experience. With an extra day to adjust, your chances of summiting increase, making it the ideal choice for those without prior high-altitude experience.

Ideal for:

  • First-time trekkers or those new to high altitude

  • Climbers looking for a more gradual ascent

  • Anyone wanting a higher chance of success with less strain

A more relaxed and scenic journey to the summit with time for proper acclimatization.

Summit success rate on the Rongai route

  • 6-day trek: Crater Rim: 91.0%, Uhuru Peak: 86%

  • 7-day trek: Crater Rim: 93.9%, Uhuru Peak: 86.8%

The 7-day itinerary offers a higher summit success rate, especially for beginners, due to better acclimatization. While the 6-day trek is suitable for experienced hikers, those new to altitude will benefit from the extra day.

We proudly share our true summit success rates. Key factors include our expert guides, who specialize in altitude acclimatization, and rigorous safety measures. Our guides conduct two daily medical check-ups, and we carry more oxygen tanks than any other company, along with fully stocked first aid kits. These efforts ensure the best chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.
